Our 2024-25 season is well underway and so far, we’re looking pretty solid. Unfortunately, our primary point guard (Brody McGuire) had an Achilles injury that happened on his first layup of the first in-season game we played and we had to pivot hard to adjust. That game definitely didn’t go as planned. But, we did adjust and Nolan Street stepped up for us. He has grit and hustles so hard. We’ve had some intense games during this period and we have been able to hold our own. I still think we’ve got a shot at state again this year. Brody is finally working his way back to 100% and had a great game against Gate City High School last week. It was so good to be on the court with him again. He and I think a lot alike when it comes to basketball, so playing with him always flows. We really do have so much talent on the court this season. Our two seniors (Reagan Cash and Bradley Gouge) are closing in on their 1000 points. Reagan is SO close, I feed him the ball every chance I get. And, I admit, I have tried to force feed him the ball when there is no chance a few times … I never want a turnover, but it will be so sweet to see Reagan celebrating that milestone. He’s used to my passing style too, so feeding him assists is fun.
My schedule stays so full during the season that it’s hard to post updates and still keep up with everything else. I’m trying to get in extra workouts every day and I feel like I’ve really amped up my defense. In fact, I think our whole team has kicked defense up a couple notches, which has made those “5-second” whistles more common this season. I am keeping my grades up and doing my best to avoid any future Spanish classes ever. Apparently, I am not wired to be bilingual.
My big brother (Noah) is also graduating this year, which seems surreal. So, I’ve been hanging out with him as much as possible for school stuff and with friends. We will play soccer together in the spring and the idea that this will be our LAST season of sports together is so weird. It’s cool, but sad, but exciting too. My mom randomly cries sometimes when she thinks about it, haha. Noah has been recruited by a few schools for golf, but I’m not sure that he’ll go that route. There’s lots of conversation about stewardship, debt and cost of living around here. Plus he can still play competitive golf even without being on a college team, so that makes him happy.
Well, that’s it for now. We play at East tomorrow night. Reagan will definitely get his 1000 that night. I know it.
